Why I Love Photographing Families Over Time

One of the things I love most about family photography in Central Queensland is getting to photograph the same families through different stages of their lives. From engagements and weddings to maternity sessions, newborns and growing families, it’s lovely to be invited back as their lives change.

Over the years, I’ve worked with families I first met as couples, then photographed their weddings, pregnancies and children as they’ve grown. One family in particular has trusted me with their engagement, wedding, maternity sessions, four babies and extended family portraits. Even though they’ve since moved away, we’re still trying to organise another session. I’m sure we’ll find a way to make it happen!

The Doring Family — Photographing Them Since 2011

The photographs in this gallery are of the Doring family, who I’ve been photographing since 2011.

Originally from Clermont, they’ve been coming back to me for family photographs for years, and it’s been lovely watching their family grow and change.

Looking back through their earlier sessions is also a reminder of how much my own photography has evolved. My editing style and approach have changed over the years, as you’d expect, but those older photographs are just as meaningful. They’re a record of who everyone was at that particular time.

Why I Love Photographing Families Over the Years

One of the lovely things about photographing families regularly is seeing the changes that happen between sessions. Children grow up, new family members arrive, and suddenly the little ones from an earlier session aren’t so little anymore.

There’s also a familiarity that comes with working together over the years. Families know what to expect from me, and I get to know their personalities and how they interact. That makes the whole experience easier, particularly when young children are involved.

And while I always want to create beautiful portraits that families will be proud to display, I also love knowing that those photographs will become part of their family history.

Family Photography in Central Queensland

I photograph families throughout Emerald, Blackwater, Clermont and the surrounding Central Highlands, often travelling to family properties for sessions.

Many of the families I work with return as their children grow or when there’s another occasion worth celebrating. It’s something I never take for granted.

If you’re considering family photography in Central Queensland, whether it’s your first session or you’re looking to update photographs taken years ago, I’d love to hear from you.
